A large number of workers are exposed to chemicals in their working environment that can cause serious illnesses. In order to ensure worker safety in the workplace, it is essential to regularly monitor the concentration levels of these hazardous pollutants in the air.

Occupational exposure, also known as “worker health” or “workplace air quality”, is one of the priorities set by the Ministry of Labour. Occupational exposure limit values (OELVs) have been officially established with the aim of protecting employees in their workplace.

Analyses

The laboratory analyses all types of pollutants present in professional environments, from the most common to the most complex, using a wide range of sampling equipment that has been validated in advance by the laboratory.

Quad-Lab laboratory offers numerous analyses in accordance with current(MétroPol, Niosh, Osha, Afnor), which include

solvents such as acetonitrile, methanol, acetone, toluene
Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reproductive Toxins (CMR) such as carbon disulfide (CS₂) or benzene
Chlorinated such as trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene or vinyl chloride
Mercaptan
Phthalates, isocyanates

What is occupational exposure measurement?

Occupational exposure measurement aims to assess the actual level of exposure of workers to chemical or biological agents, whether during a specific task or throughout their entire workstation.

Why measure worker exposure?

This measurement allows you to:
• Objectively assess exposure levels after a risk assessment.
• Verify that exposure levels comply with regulatory limits (OEL or OELV).
• Define and adapt prevention measures.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the protective measures put in place.
• Measure a process’s capacity to emit pollutants into the air.

When should these measurements be taken?

Measurements must be taken regularly and systematically after any change that could alter exposure, such as:
• the introduction of new products;
• changes to manufacturing processes;
• changes to operating conditions.

What is an OEL?

Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) apply only to chemical agents. They indicate the maximum concentration of a chemical substance in the air over a given period, below which the health risk is considered negligible.

How are OELs set?

OELs are defined by regulations (binding or indicative). If no French limit value exists for a product, it is possible to refer to the recommendations of foreign organisations, such as:
• GESTIS (Germany)
• NIOSH (United States)

What types of measurements are there?

Atmospheric measurements: only assess exposure through inhalation.
Biological measurements/biometrology: take into account all routes of exposure (respiratory, cutaneous, etc.).

How is a worker sampled?

The sample is taken from the individual during a period representative of their job and under conditions similar to their normal activity. This provides realistic results on actual exposure.

Can you detect unidentified substances?

Yes, screening-type measurements can detect unknown chemical agents and characterise the ambient air.

Are your analyses compliant with standards and regulations?

Yes, all measurements follow reference methods and laboratories are COFRAC accredited, ensuring reliability and regulatory compliance.
